Emer Maguire BSc

Emer graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in July 2014 with a First Class Honours degree in Actuarial Science and Risk Management. As part of her course, Emer completed a 13 month placement with a well known life and pensions company in Dublin. Upon completion of her degree, she gained exemptions from the actuarial Core Technical subjects (CT) 1-8. During her time at Spence, she has passed the professional actuarial examinations and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries in July 2018 (pending completion of work-based skills by January 2019).

Emer joined the Actuarial & Investment Function at Spence & Partners in September 2014. Within this role, she is applying knowledge of actuarial concepts and skills to tasks whilst sampling a diverse range of pensions work, encompassing both defined benefit and defined contribution schemes. During her time at Spence, she has built up experience in assisting organisations in the UK Not for Profit sector with reviews of their pension options including and assisting with liability management exercises. This includes a cost-benefit analysis of some of the options available and involves regular interaction with clients to ensure such complex exercises run smoothly.

Emer also completes work for Spence’s Trustee and Corporate clients, which includes assisting in the preparation of actuarial valuations, accounting disclosures and producing various reports as well as involvement in bespoke pieces of actuarial work.

As an actuary at Spence and Partners, Emer has the opportunity to enhance her technical abilities and develop core actuarial competences on a daily basis whilst working in a challenging environment as part of a rapidly growing, innovative pension consulting firm.
