Richard Smith is an actuary who has worked in the pensions industry for over 2 decades, during which time he has built up a great deal of knowledge of the differing viewpoints and objectives held by a range of stakeholders in respect of their occupational pension schemes. As a result, he has substantial experience of providing pragmatic support to his clients, tailored to their particular needs. A qualified Scheme Actuary, Richard advises a portfolio of trustee clients as well as sponsoring employers – an area of particular focus in previous roles. Areas of expertise include accounting for pension costs, liability management exercises, dealing with the pensions issues arising from M&A activity and scheme funding.

Before joining Spence & Partners in 2014, Richard worked for two major benefits consultancies holding senior roles in both actuarial consulting and management positions. He qualified as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 1999.

Richard acts as a volunteer advisor in the Pensions Ombudsman’s Early Resolution Service, a rewarding role which ensures that the most important perspective – that of the pension scheme member – remains at the forefront of his mind. He has also provided guidance and support to student actuaries over a number of years acting as an Exam Counsellor for the Actuarial Profession.
